6 Effective Link Building Strategies

Link building is touch. It’s so touch that most link builders have fallen to using black hat tactics in order to build their backlink portfolio. Google has come flat out and said that these black hat tactics are going to do you more harm than good. Here is their verbiage right from the Google Guidelines when talking about spending money on links:

Buying or selling links that pass PageRank. This includes exchanging money for links, or posts that contain links; exchanging goods or services for links; or sending someone a “free” product in exchange for them writing about it and including a link

That’s why it’s very important to do this the right way. That means putting in the effort of time and patience to make it happen. It’s not fun, it’s time consuming, and it’s tedious, but at the end of the day, your results will be better.

Another note on link building is that the best results come from your PR efforts. Some of the tactics outlined below are going to be PR based, which can be positive for link building, but even more important, popular for generating brand awareness and industry recognition. It’s the most authentic way to build backlinks organically. When you initiate effective PR, you will naturally gain backlinks from the publicity you receive. If you pair your publicity with really good content, your efforts will pay off big time.

1. Steal Competitor Links

Google search operators have empowered us. Using the “link:” operator, you can search for websites that are linking over to your competitors. You can see where they are getting their links from so you can try to get those linked pointed at you instead.

Here’s the format.

Using this style of search, you can find all the resources linking to your competitors. You’ll need to manually reach out to the webmasters of each site and try to convince them to link to you instead. The success rate here can vary depending on what the link is for. You’ll want your content to be better than your competitors so the webmasters have a powerful reason to listen to you ask.

2. Sponsored Posts

Since Google has made it clear you are not allowed to purchase backlinks, you’ll want to use this as a PR opportunity instead of a blunt link purchase. Many times this means adding a “nofollow” parameter, but brand exposure to a new audience can turn into additional backlinks if your content is good enough.

Here’s how you can find these opportunities using Google search.

This search format is going to help you find posts that are labeled as sponsored posts that also contain your keyword and niche area. The results are going to give you a lot of options for getting sponsored post out there. The more specific your keyword that you use, the more specific the opportunities will be.

Your post needs to be less about selling your product or service and more about providing value to the readers of these posts. Remember, this is a PR opportunities and you’ll want to provide really good content in order to benefit from this organically.

3. Find More Relevant Link Opportunities

Let’s pretend you found a really good site that you would like a link from. It’s in your niche, it has a good audience within your target, it checks all the boxes. Additional Google searches can help you identify websites that are similar. Here’s how this one works.

The results are going to pull in websites that are related to the site that you found. You’ll be able to take your backlink opportunity and multiply it quickly by finding sites that are similar. Again, you’ll have to contact the owners of these sites and figure out the best way to earn that link. High quality and valuable content is usually the best approach.

4. Pitch Infographics

Infographics are a great way to earn backlinks. They are easily digestible pieces of data that users love. If you have some data, statistics, or information that if valuable to your audience, create a really great infographic that portrays that information. Then, publish it! Post it around on your site and social networks. Get it out there for people to find.

Taking it a step further, find websites that feature infographics as well and pitch your ballin’ new graphic to them. Show them how awesome it is and entice them to publish it as well with a link back to the originating article.

Really good infographics are easy to pick up some backlinks with.

5. Link Round-Ups

People love lists. How many times have you seen click bait articles of “Top 10” this and “Best 18” that? The internet is overloaded with lists (this article is one of them). So… why not get your links on those lists? Create some really good content, and go pitch it to the people that are curating these lists to earn some backlinks.

Here’s how you find them.

Play with some of these different search operators to see what the results come back with. There’s likely going to be a bunch of options for list articles.

Next, you can pitch your link to the publishers of these articles. Get ahold of them and share your link giving them a good reason why you should be included on their list. Another strategy is to find links that are broken on these articles and let the authors know. Then give them your link as an alternative (and better) option.

6. Guest Posting Opportunities

A lot of industry related blogs out there accept guest posts. Take advantage of this. There are a lot of options for trying to find these sites. Here are some options.

Pair these with other search operators and you’ll find yourself with really great high-quality opportunities to contribute content to other sites, all while including your backlinks.

The overarching theme here is content. You can’t get good quality backlinks without really great content. If you are not putting great content out there that is digestible and desirable by your audience, you’re not going to earn the backlinks that you seek. After all, the sayin’ still goes that “content is king”.

Write good content, then go after the links.
